I've completed this, too.
I have bought and rented land all over SL. If anybody has any questions, I might be able to help you 'cause I've probably experienced it at one time or another. :-P Feel free to message me here or inworld (Panama Marama).

After a slow start, I've completed Unit 1, all except hanging up my personal sign (it's stuck in my Inventory). I think I'll be ready to move on.

How's everyone doing with their individual projects? I'm having trouble figuring out where to begin. I know what my content will be (FCIL resources in SL) and I know the model I will use (Anne Idler's Nova spot). But I'm not sure where to begin. Should my project reside in my office space? Wht are y'all doing?

Hi all - I'm been trying to find a spot to emerge in when I log into Second Life. I've been using the workshop parcel as my "home" (especially as the two Orientation Islands I used to call "home" seem to have folks just hanging around (loitering?) there), but do y'all have favorite other spots? Thanks!

Thanks, shall try to get in tomorrow before class and see if I'm successful (5th floor). And yes, I'll be at tomorrow's class. I'm hoping to read up first and practice a little more building so I can actually do some of the scripting this time...:-) From the first Scripting 101 class I attended, I felt empowered just knowing what it's going to enable me to do. Now I get to try it a little tomorrow. We'll see what happens. I think I might need remedial Building 101 and Scripting 101...:-)

What is a 3D collection?

I agree with what most of these folks are saying: so far the majority of the collections are still two-dimensional, things that can easily be reproduced on a web page. Links, photos, audio files. And that is fine as we are learning our way through this very new environment. But the next step is how do we actually utilize the three-dimensional environment in information? As one person said, the islands and collections that reproduce environments are on the right track. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the Globe Theatre on Renaissance Island. As a theatre person, that has the potential of being a very useful "display" for me because it goes beyond drawings or photos on a page. The next step would be, how could we use it to impart information to visitors?
I have loved being in SL these last couple of years. Being able to meet new colleagues from around the world in 3D seems to bring more sense of personality to who these people really are, and I think that is wonderful for networking. But now I'm at the point where I'm saying, ok, as a librarian what ELSE can I do with this? Hence, the reason I'm taking this workshop. :-)

On a related note, you might be interested in "A Little Grafting of Second Life into a Legal Research Class," by Rob Hudson, at http://www.llrx.com/features/secondlife.htm. He talks about several ways SL can be used to enhance legal research instruction, and several obstacles.
I think SL has great potential for showing context or relationship between information sources, but most law students don't have prior experience in SL. With everything they have to learn, it may not be realistic to expect them to also learn SL with its learning curve. I think the same is also true of many of our patrons. Unless they have another reason for going to SL, they are unlikely to go there for information. Maybe the trick will be to integrate our services into projects of our parent institutions or other SL institutions, so that we can deliver information where and when our lawyers, judges, students, and other patrons need it.

I decided to edit my office-sign cube to match my new bookshelves and stack the cube on top. But the cube won't stack; it hovers over the bookshelf. Is that because of the sign script?

I tried dragging it down and inputting exact position numbers. As soon as I close the edit window, it bounces back up. It's not a big deal, just a curiosity.
I'm going to be away from my computer most of this week. Maybe we could look at it before or after the next class meeting if you have time.

Okay, I spent some time yesterday shopping at the freebie sites and teleporting everywhere. All I want is two chairs and a sofa or table for my office, cheaply. Where can I get those without using up my now 198 Linden dollars? Thanks!

Keep your eyes on how many prims an item has as well as how much it costs in $L -- we're short on prims on the site, which is a chronic problem in SL!

here's an interesting article from the creators of the International Justice Center in Second Life (http://www.justicecenter.net/):
How do you use a virtual world to stimulate action in the real world (in ways that are not better done on the traditional Internet)? http://www.holymeatballs.org/2008/05/what_activates_people.html
This resonates with me because I have spent some time trying to decide what ways SL can be used for law librarianship and instruction that are not better done on the traditional Internet (or indeed in person). The article concludes that SL is no better (and in fact less useful) for putting people in touch with their representatives or gathering donations, but that it is promising for connecting people and outreach (viral marketing).

This isn't an endorsement, but it fits in with Unit 2's "culture" theme, sort of.

"Referring to Mont's post below, I'm definitely an augmentationist. I completed my profile with my real world information, and my avatar name Jeanell is a mix of my real first name--Jeanie--and NELL for New England Law Librarians. If anybody sees me in SL, please feel free to ask about where I'm from, etc. And I guess from my side, I probably won't ask unless asked first or if it seems clear that you want to talk. I think a class list would be great, by the way. " I've just added the SL avatar names to the "participant" chart at http://vwlawlibrarians.wetpaint.com/page/Participant+pages. I know I missed a few! some folks have logged in and contacted me in-world and I don't know which wiki account they are associated with. Let me know of any corrections, or, better yet just edit the page :)

Welcome to the workshop. I'm still frantically setting up the material for units 2-5! I'm a very excited that so many people are interested, and a little bit surprised too.
I'll be holding office hours at 9am (Pacific) Wednesdays and Saturdays. Why those times? I will be at home with my nice computer, instead of at work with my underpowered one -- it will run SL but it's painful.
However, I know some people can't make those times, so I'm working on another office hour. Thursdays, at 10:30-11:30 Pacific work for folks?
Thanks!
