size="2">

Displays:

-web links or a collection of web links can be housed in a "computer monitor" (the usual metaphor) or in something topical (I just made a bookshelf for a link to a virtual law bibliography, and a "newspaper display" for a link to my news archive; for an example look at the unit 5 area inworld). Links will open up in a stripped-down but functional browser in-world, or the viewer can choose to open them in their standard external browser.

-text info can be saved on a notecard and distributed from an object; the object can be a poster, a "book," "bookshelf," or anything you want. The info can also include embedded landmarks, textures, or other notecards (but not objects). For an example, look at the "Click here for law and library sites" poster in the Unit 2 area inworld.

- images (including images of text, such as a pdf) can be inserted into a "THiNC book" or "Intellibook," and distributed freely that way. THiNC books are a bit cumbersome and laggy, but they make a nice presentation. You can include the text on a notecard built into the book as well. For an example look at the "Galileo Law Directory" in the Unit 4 area inworld.

- objects can be distributed by placing them inside another object along with a "giver" script. The distributing object can be any shape.

-A series of images (such as powerpoint slides) can be loaded into a slideshow device that lets the owner flip through them during a presentation. The devices can also be set up to let any viewer flip through them, to serve as a stand-alone display. More elaborate versions of this can offer the viewer a unique link, notecard or object for each image (bucky barkley's "Slider 3.0").

-sound: each parcel can have a "music" setting (which could also be a podcast or other audio file) which can be heard if a player device is set up. These often are created to look like radios, turntables, or other "real life" music devices, but can be shaped like anything. Anyone who turns on audio (it's an option) will hear the same thing. Only the landowner, or someone the landowner gives permissions to, can change the music setting.

-video/web: similarly, each parcel can have a "video or web content" setting. (Unfortunately it's one or the other, not both.) The specified video or web content can be viewed if a player device is set up. Anyone who turns on video streaming (it's an option) will see the same thing. A commonly-used one is called "FreeView," but you can use others or set up your own using a basic script. Here's a nice video tutorial on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gowmZtkrV4Y
Only the landowner, or someone the landowner gives permissions to, can change the video/web setting.

Multiple videos, per-person videos:
Bucky Barkley, and probably others, have found a way to display multiple videos on the same land. It is per-person, meaning that anyone standing near the player will see the blank player, even if someone else is watching, until they start it up themselves, and then they can choose whichever of the videos they prefer. You can see examples of this in the Unit 1 and Unit 4/5 areas of our site inworld. This is a "commericially produced" device from Bucky's store Buckaroo (currently closed!) but he does give discounts or free for educational use.

Databases and info from "outside" SL:
There are several ways to pull info from outside of SL into SL.
Google calendars, for instance, can be accessed from within SL (in a fairly crude way). http://www.calendarcogs.com/
Twitter displays can be created. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF59hA8xIC4
RSS feeds can be displayed. Let me know if you have a specific type of interest.

Here's what we've got right now:

Four branches, each with its own look and locale.

1. Info Island, Bell Library (5th Fl) -- the first branch -- on the first island of what is now Info Archipelago. This is more of a collection than an independent library as it occupies one floor of a several-building complex which also holds other social science and science topics. It's also limited to 125 prims.

2. Justice Center, Malfelonius sim -- nice building with lots of space and (as far as I know) lots of prims to play with. room to grow here. it's supposed to be a "library and research center" (whatever the landlord means by that) and has room for meetings, moot courts, etc. Justice center aims to attract legal-focused tenants and includes 'free' space for nonprofits.

3. Depo 6 -- a pretty new building, built just for us, in a business park that has law firms and other businesses, and is professionally run. I didn't have any input into the design, and it's a little... dark and angle-y for my taste, but it has a courtroom attached, a lounge area, and a deck overlooking the water which might be nice for gatherings.

4. Tabula Rasa -- this is a new area also, attached to the TR courtroom. TR is a newish area that is aimed at legal community and hosts the Metaverse Republic (an SL self-governance project) as well as other groups. At one point MR was interested in having my library be the "official repository" of their laws and procedures.

There is at least one other person who has approached me about putting in a branch library but I have not yet followed up.

Projects:

1. update current resources. I have a lot of collections of web links, many annotated, but have not updated them in a long time. I also have info on several recent or ongoing virtual law court cases or investigations, which I have been meaning to go into PACER or other sources and update.

2. projects specific to each branch. I would like to contact the local residents/businesses and do something unique for each of the branches focused on the interests of the area.

3. plan 'grand openings' for the three branches, none of them has had one.

4. anything you think might be fun or useful!

thanks!

051508 transcript

 Azure Bisiani: hi
You: hiya
You: have you done much building?
Azure Bisiani: none, other than my office sign
You: don't want to repeat stuff you know
You: ok
Azure Bisiani: I'd love to do more
You: great, let's start by making a cube
Azure Bisiani: k
You: you can create by right-clicking on the ground and choosing "create"
You: then you should have a magic wand as ursor and a window with info on the object yo're creating
Azure Bisiani: yes
You: ok
Azure Bisiani: what's next
You: if the window is not fully open (should be longer than it is wide), click <<More to expand it
Azure Bisiani: It's fully open
You: you should then see some check boxes and radio buttons at the top, and five tabs along the middle
You: great
Azure Bisiani: yes
You: quick look at the General tab
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: you can rename your object and include an (optional) description)
Azure Bisiani: I see
You: you can also find out info about other people's objects by selecting them, choosing edit, and looking here
Azure Bisiani: good to know
You: you also use this screen to set permissions
Azure Bisiani: k
You: by default the item is yours and yours alone, but you can select to let people take copies, modify, and / or transfer the item themselves
Azure Bisiani: I see
You: lots of items for sale are no copy, no modify, no transfer, so that you can buy it but not replicate it for others
Azure Bisiani: makes sense
You: but people will also set it to let people take their own copies sometimes
You: ok moving along to Object tab
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: unless you have questions
Azure Bisiani: nope
You: object tab has lots of options for changing the basic prim shape
You: be default the cube will always start out at .5x.5x.5
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: that is the "Size (Meters)" setting
Azure Bisiani: i see
You: you can change this by selecting the "Stretch" radio button, or by yuping numbers into the box for precision
Azure Bisiani: ah
You: you can also move it in 3-d by using the "position" option - again, you can select the radio button and drag it around using the arrows, or position it more precisely with numbers
You: there is a limit to how big you can make things - generally 10x10x10 is the max.
Azure Bisiani: go it
Azure Bisiani: got it
You: since this is SL, you can even move the box above the ground and just leav it there
You: that's how i made the office levels
Azure Bisiani: how do you do that?
You: use the "position" tool and drag it up using the blue arrow
Azure Bisiani: got it
You: positions can be tricky so usually try to look at things from several angles to make sure it's really where you thought it was
Azure Bisiani: got it

You: Also on this tab are options to make chan ges to the building block type - we can change these into spheres, etc, by usinmg the pulldown box at the right
Azure Bisiani: I see
You: the options are almost all standard geometric shapes except sculpty, that is a different animal altogether & I'm not covering it at the moment
Azure Bisiani: sure
You: you see the options to taper, and otherwise warp the box
Azure Bisiani: yeah
You: there are similar options for all shapes, but some have unique options. like the sphere her has "dimple"
You: you can also use the "rotate" option to shift your object in three dimensions
Azure Bisiani: I just tried to change the material to glass, but I don't see a change
Azure Bisiani: cool
You: the material and the texture (image) are separate issues
Azure Bisiani: ok
Azure Bisiani: just curious
You: if you change the material it will have some effects - like, glass has very low friction - so people use it for vehicle tires, oddly
You: but it can still look like wood, or rubber, or what have you
Azure Bisiani: hmm
You: I do not know the uses of material choices
You: other than that friction thing, which I just read while prepping for this class :)
Azure Bisiani: : )
You: hollow and path cut let you do pretty cool things
You: hollow
You: path cut
Azure Bisiani: cool
You: so that's something to play with
You: for now let's move on to the second major thing I wanted to touch on
Azure Bisiani: sounds good
You: skip the features tab for now. Go to Textures tab
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: Textures is how you make things look different from their basic wood
You: you see the swatch of wood texture on the tab (on the left)
Azure Bisiani: yes
You: if you click on that, you will get a window that lets you browse your inventory for textures
Azure Bisiani: got it
Azure Bisiani: are there some in there I would I have to have gotten them somewhere?
You: there should be a "textures" folder under the "Library " section
You: in your inventory, "Library" is built in items that you can never delete
Azure Bisiani: I see it now
You: you may also have textures that you have picked up here and there
You: you can get big collections of textures free
You: ok, great
You: one texture is transparent - lots of good uses for that one
You: windows, arer just the beginning
Azure Bisiani: where are those?
You: there should be one called White-transparent in your library
You: here's another one
Azure Bisiani accepted your inventory offer.
Azure Bisiani: thanks
You: you can adjust how transparent things are on the texture tab, at the right top
You: you can also make them glow
You: it works best with some textures and not others
Azure Bisiani: I see it
You: ok great
You: bumpiness is neat, it gives you texture
You: often pretty subtle
Azure Bisiani: I'm not seeing it
You: it is a preference whether you see it or not, you may have the preference turned off to make things run faster
You: hi Mont
Montserrat Biedermann: hi Cat!
Azure Bisiani:
Hi Montserrat
Montserrat Biedermann: Hi Azure!
You: so here is a trick that took me a long time to learn
You: see at the top left, there is a radio button for 'select texture'
Azure Bisiani: yes
You: if you click that radio button you should see little circles with cross in them on each side of the object
Azure Bisiani: yes
You: if you now click just ONE side of the object, you should see the circle only on that side
Azure Bisiani: yes
You: now if you choose a texture it will ONLY go on that side
You: so you can make each ide different

[here is a NEW torley linden video on this very topic! http://vidtuts.s3.amazonaws.com/QUICKTIP-Make-a-1-way-tinted-window.mp4]

Azure Bisiani: I can't get it to work
You: i had a heck of a time getting this to work
You: make sure the circle is showing on the side you want to change
Azure Bisiani: yes it is
You: while it's still showing click the texture swatch
You: in the Texture tab
Azure Bisiani: Yes, I am
Azure Bisiani: I've got my texture up - now what?
You: then choose a new texture -- and click select
You: it *should* work
You: like I said I had a lot of trouble with this at first
Azure Bisiani: nope
You: i'm not sure why
Azure Bisiani: well, I can play with it
Azure Bisiani: I think I have both color and texture applied to my object
You: ok
Azure Bisiani: How do I get the color off?
You: that can happen
Azure Bisiani: Is there a way to get the color back to the default?
You: click the color swatch and select white
You: i think that's the only way -- only way I know
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: to chang the texture back to default, click texture swatch and choose default
You: you can also choose "blank" for texture - handy if you're trying to color something and don't want the woodgrain to come thru
Azure Bisiani: ok - now my one sided texture worked
You: to adjust the stretchyness of the texture you can change repeats per face
You: to make the texture smaller raise the repeats per face number
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: you can also rotate the texture and move it up and down or side to side
You: so this is another area to play with
You: questions?
Azure Bisiani: no - this is neat
You: here's the really useful thing about textures
You: you can make your own textures and import them
You: this is how I make posters, etc
Azure Bisiani: oh
You: you have to make the texture in an external program like photoshop, a draw program, or even power point
Azure Bisiani: Like a photo?
You: you can use a photo
Azure Bisiani: how do you import?
You: the restriction is that you need to save it in specific formats - jpg is the most common
Azure Bisiani: ok You: then you go to file menu
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: upload image
Azure Bisiani: k
You: it will cost you $L10 each
You: not much in US dollars but it adds up :)
Azure Bisiani: sure
Azure Bisiani: Once it's imported, how do you apply to your shape?
You: once it's uploaded it will be in your inventory to select
Azure Bisiani: ok
You: using the same method we were using for these textures
Azure Bisiani: cool
You: ok, any other questions on that?
I want to cover one more area
Azure Bisiani: go for it
You: we are going to look at making more complex items, linking two prims together to form one larger object
Azure Bisiani: god
Azure Bisiani: good
You: you can duplicate your current object by holding down shift, and dragging the position arrow
You: well, select position radio button first You: then shift-drag
Azure Bisiani: woah -
