You: morning everyone
Twobears Stand: morning
Ismene Hitendra: Good morning
Tink Rang: good morning
Coffee Pot owned by Cat Galileo gave you 'Mug of Coffee' (
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eduisland%204/34/146/24
).
Ruth Zabelin: hi!
Mug of Coffee : Hot strong coffee!!
You: if you would like some virtual coffee click the pot and "wear" the mugged coffee
You: if you think virtual food is goofy, well, I'm kind of with you :) but its fun
Mug of Coffee : Hot strong coffee!!
You: morning montserrat
Ismene Hitendra: It's kind of cute
Tink Rang: I'm not a coffee drinker but I like coke
Montserrat Biedermann: good morning!
Mug of Coffee : Hot strong coffee!!
You: how's everyone doing? having fun in SL? having any particular trouble or questions?
Ruth Zabelin: everything still feels really awkward
You: /nod
Twobears Stand: True but then again, its still kind of coool
Polly Lehrner: Same for me, but I haven't practiced
Ismene Hitendra: I'm just having trouble coming up with a plan for how I want to set up my demo
You: you have something in mind?
Ismene Hitendra: No--that's the problem!
You: =)
You: no worries
You: we are going to take a look at a couple of libraries today
Ismene Hitendra: Cool
Tink Rang: great
You: and perhaps it will give some idea of what types of things people are doing
You: I want to give folks a few more minutes to gather
You: montserrat, if you click the chair and choose "sit", another chair will appear for the next person
You: tho we're getting pretty tight around this table :)
You: so today I was going to give a quick overview of law and library 'culture' in SL
Forelle Broek is Online
You: there are a LOT of librarians and educators in SL
You: a LOT
You: if you're interested in finding out more about what the general library community is doing, you may want to join the following group:
You: Second Life Library 2.0
You: that is a group for folks interested in the Alliance Library project but who are not wanting to volunteer
You: if you're interested in volunteering, the group Librarians of Second Life is a good group to join
You: to join a group, search for it in the SL search bar, click on it, and you should get a description of the group and the option to join
You: some groups are closed and require invitations, like this class
You: but many are just open to anyone interested
You: I've put up a list of libraries in Second life in the unit 2 area
You: it is 7 or 8 pages long
You: and growing all the time :)
You: I run a law library on Info Island that is part of the Alliance Second Life Library project
You: we'll pop over there shortly
Ruth Zabelin: when you say Unit 2 Area, do you mean that thing we can see over there?
You: yes
Ruth Zabelin: thx
You: the slideshow is a list of libraries and related groups
You: The blue book is my own creation, the Galileo Law Directory
You: I try to search out law-related groups and attorneys and list them there
You: it's also on my website (somewhat more convenient to read, IMO) at www.lawspotonline.com/directory.jsp
Montserrat Biedermann: I've looked at it - it's great!
You: There are lawyers and law offices, some groups offering ADR, educational groups, Bar Associations, and what I have loosely called "governance and law in second life' groups for lack of a betterterm
You: Thanks :)
You: We will look at a couple of sites for those today too
You: however, many of them are groups that do not have a site in SL, they are just basically chat groups
You: so if you're interested in their topics you can join them too
You: a hot topic is, what kind of laws do /should apply to commerce and intellectual property in SL?
You: there's a lot of talk about that
You: and many of the 'governance' groups focus on their own version of what should be put into place
You: the most active of these, as far as I know, is the Metaverse Republic, which is trying to build a voluntary legal system with due process hearings, and enforce by members of the group banning miscreants
You: the idea being if enough people join up, this will be an effective form of governance
You: this is a bit controversial
You: but interesting
You: it's led by a British lawyer, some of the more interesting things have been seeing different countries' attorneys trying to come to agreement
You: there are a couple of groups that do regular discussions of economy and law
Twobears Stand: It must be tricky with all of the different systems of laws that people have.
You: a good one is the Metaversed discussions (no relation to metaverse republic)_
You: yes Twobears, in the one meeting I attended, they spent 20 minuts or so fighting over what a certain phrase meant, turned out it has a specific connotation in US that it doesn't have in GB, so the British lawyer thought the Americans were being unsatisfactorily vague
You: i forget exactly what phrase it was, something along the lines of abuse of public trust
You: anyway
Twobears Stand: I have to admit, as someone who comes from a Canadian system, some of the American terms are different, but then I'm sure you would feel the same way.
You: many of these groups have websites as well as in-world presences
You: I have tried to include those in my directory when I can
You: any questions, comments?
Montserrat Biedermann: yes, how do you find foreign law SL sites, and how do I get a Diet Coke in SL?
Tink Rang: I found Coke, but haven't found a Diet coke yet.
You: +)
You: i have seen diet coke
You: dont' have any at the moment
You: foreign law SL sitse
Tink Rang: I just gave him a coke
Montserrat Biedermann: thanks, Tink!
Tink Rang: yw
You: I do my best to search in the SL search function for words I know in other languages
You: abogado, advocatto, barrister, etc
You: there are some who contact me (I'm also involved in the SL Bar association, and that is quite international)
You: unfortunately I am pretty much limited to English and poor Spanish so i am sure I'm missing some
You: the first place we will head to on our tour is Info Island International
Montserrat Biedermann: thanks!
You: which is a good place to find international library groups
You: the SLBar Association, as I said, is pretty international
You: although most definitely english-speaking
You: any other questions before we head over to info internatinoal?
You: has everyone clicked on thebrown circle to get a notecard? if not, please do so
You: the notecard has a lot of sites on it. we will only go to a few in the intrest of time. the others you might be interseted in visiting on your own
You: first place I would like for us to go is Info Island International Refererence
You: click on the landmark and you should get a window offering to teleport you
Twobears Stand: which landmark?
You: everyone familiar with using note cards? the notecard will be in your inventory
You: open the notecard up and the 4th entry on the card is "Info Island International"
You: with a push-pin to symbolize that it is a landmark

Gareth Otsuka: Hi polly, twobears
Gareth Otsuka: Welcome to Info International.
Gareth Otsuka: Let me know if I can be of assistance.
Twobears Stand: Hi
Gareth Otsuka: Hi cat
You: excellent, i think everyone's here
Montserrat Biedermann: yes, I didn't move fast enough out of the way!
You: Gareth, I am showing around this group as part of my workshop for law librarians
Gareth Otsuka: ic
You: of course our first stop is info international
Gareth Otsuka: gr8 :)
You: can you tell them the short version of what you're up to here?
Gareth Otsuka: It's a library reference desk, manned by live librarians at various points during the day
You: the librarians are volunteers from all over
You: this is also probbly the first stime most of you will see these monitors
You: the monitors are pretty commonly used in libraries
You: if you touch them, they will give you a menu of websites
You: if you choose one, it will launch the site for you
You: either in your extermal browser, or in a mini-browser in SL
You: you can choose which you prefer, i think internal is default
You: the internal is the hot new development from Linden -- brand new feature
Gareth Otsuka: you can set the default as a preference
Tink Rang: I saw that the other day, it's great
Ismene Hitendra: How difficult is it to set one of these up in our own library?
You: we can get them for you easily
You: I dont think i have one that I can copy and give you
You: but they are easily available
Gareth Otsuka: they are free for info island archipelago use
Ismene Hitendra: Sounds good
Gareth Otsuka: you just have to configure a config card to set one up
Gareth Otsuka: quite easy
You: there are also some other neat gadgets here - slideshows, maps, etc
Gareth Otsuka: there is a hot wire to a google calendar also
You: this is a super place to come and see what others are doing in their libraries
You: any questions before we move on?
You: ok
You: open up the Law and Library sites notecard again please
You: next place I want to take us is my law library
You: so please find the landmark for "LawSpot, Bell Island"
You: and teleport there

You: this is actually on the very first info island, before it grew to be an archipelago
You: as you can see I make heavy use of the monitors
You: and a few other types of resources - the books hand out topical notecards
You: the squares on the window are connected to blogs on law and virtual worlds
You: we are on the 5th floor of the building -- other floors have general social science topics
You: oh and the Docket lists cases related to virtual worlds
You: and hands a notecard if you clikc the name
You: the building is something that the Info Island people came up with after trying many different conficgurations
You: who needs a door when everyone can fly? :)
You: you can tp from floor to floor though using the blue and green buttons here
You: if you look out you can see the other parts of Info Island and some of our neighbors too

You: again the neighbors will be library or educational groups
You: this site is also part of the Info Archieplago

Montserrat Biedermann: ok...:-) makes sense - "we're recruiting!"
You: so this is NOT on info island archipelago :)
You: it is the SL office of a lawfirm in Great Britain
You: the first firm to open up significant offices in SL
You: there are a couple others now
You: they have some slideshows and other resources talking about legal issues that affect SL
You: as well as their promotional material of course :)
You: this island and the adjacent ones are part of a business enterprise called depo
You: depo consulting
You: they will help you set up your second life presense - for a fee
Twobears Stand: How much are we talking about?
You: this actually turns out to be one of the revenue models that seems to work in SL
You: I don't know Twobears -- i've asked folks and they don't want to give estimates -- but they charge professional design rates usually
Twobears Stand: ok
You: i think in my case it's a matter of 'if you have to ask.... you can't afford it'
You: =)
You: they do good work tho
You: i am opening a law library branch here (well, on the next region over) at their invitation
You: they have some focus on law firms and businesses thaty might need law firsm
Montserrat Biedermann: nice!
You: questions, comments?
You: probably only have time for 1 more before 10 am
You: we can keep going a bit longer if you want but I dont' want to keep you either
You: why dont we scroll all the way down and visit extropia

You: there's a momorail over where tink is
You: give you a bit of a tour
Tink Rang: There's no signs of where it goes
You: there are several communities that have self-governance as a stated goal
You: the ones I nkow aout are listed on the notecard
You: they also are well worth visiting just for the scenery
You: each has a theme
Twobears Stand: Thanks Cat, I gotta go!
