Workshop timeline


January, 2008-April, 2008: Coordinator:
  • prepares curriculum for workshop, including locating or creating video tutorials and arranging speakers and tours.
  • creates a library of resources (objects, scripts, information) for participants to use, to be located on the project’s land.
  • arranges promotional announcements to AALL members via listservs and calendar, and enables early sign-ups.

February, 2008 Coordinator:
  • locates and schedules scripting contractors for the workshop.
  • creates project wiki.

March, 2008: Coordinator:
  • locates and acquires land for the project.
  • creates sandbox, office space for participants, “locker room,” resource collection.
  • makes arrangements for transmission and recording of web-based presentation.
  • prepares introductory web-based presentation.
  • promotes presentation and workshop.

April 16, 2008:
  • Coordinator presents 30-minute introductory web-based presentation. Presentation will be recorded for later viewing.

April 17, 2008: Self-paced workshop available.
  • Workshop components:
    • Survey of interests, experience with Second Life, and preferred meeting times.
    • Weekly “office hour” during which participants can meet with the coordinator and each other – times to be arranged based on survey responses.
    • Introduction to Second Life: Getting started tutorial – controls, navigation, choice of viewers, brief overview of item creation (building): Live speaker/demonstration (30 minutes), followed by optional shopping trip.
    • Introduction to the history and cultures of Second Life in general, and the legal and library communities in particular: Live speakers (by appointment) (1 hour minimum; includes tour)
    • Introduction to land acquisition (rental and purchase) and land management tools and issues. Live speakers or video tutorial. (30 minutes)
    • Building 101, with brief overview of scripting: Live speaker and/or tutorial. (30 minutes)
    • Scripting 101: Live speaker and/or tutorial. “Scripting” refers to programming items to perform tasks such as lighting up, rotating, or displaying a series of slides. More complex scripting can create items that react to commands, work as vehicles, pull data in from a web-based database, and much more. This tutorial will focus primarily on adapting the collection of pre-written scripts to specific uses. (30 minutes)
    • Independent project: Each participant will develop at least one resource, exhibit, or program for display or presentation in Second Life. Participants whose project requires complex building or scripting may be able to use the services of the workshops’ contractors, as funding permits. (Estimated time: 2 hours minimum, more depending on the nature of the project.)
    • Workshop evaluation: each participant will fill out a detailed evaluation including feedback for the coordinator as well as comments and conclusions about the utility of Second Life for law libraries.

August, 2008:
  • Coordinator makes arrangements for transmission and recording of web-based presentation.

August 21, 2008: (changed from Aug 14)
  • Open house displaying projects (or reports on presentations).

August 15-Aug. 26, 2008:
  • Coordinator prepares web-based presentation recapping workshop participation, projects, and conclusions.
Aug. 27, 2008:
  • Coordinator presents 30-minute concluding web-based presentation. Presentation will be recorded for later viewing.
