If Second Life is installed on your computer, clicking this link (known as a "SLURL") will start Second Life and take your avatar directly to New Media Consortium's location in SL.

Live speaker/demonstration

First session: Saturday, April 19, 9 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time
Transcript
Additional sessions TBA based on participant availability
Location: Law Libraries in Virtual Worlds parcel (SLURL: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eduisland%204/56/140/24)

This demonstration will be held on location in Second Life at the Law Librarians in Virtual Worlds site. Confirmed participants may claim and furnish a small office on the site and may use the site as a "sandbox" for experimenting with building items. Confirmed participants will also receive a small stipend to use in purchasing basic clothing and items to get started.

Demonstration will assume participants have completed the minimum orientation and will provide more detailed info about navigating, communication, customizing avatar appearance, and brief overview of building and scripting items, as well as answering questions. After the demonstration, we will visit two locations specializing in free or very low cost items for new arrivals ("newbies") to pick up some clothing, customized avatars, and functional and fun items.

Activity:
Customize your avatar's appearance as desired. Select an office on the VWLL parcel. Build a basic sign to identify your office. (I will demonstrate the office and sign at the Saturday, April 19 meeting or by appointment. Go ahead and get in touch with me if you won't be able to make the Saturday meeting.)

Additional web resources:
There are many video based tutorials available via YouTube, the New Media Consortium site, and others. A very good source of basic tutorials is Torley Lives, where Linden Lab employee Torley Linden hosts videos depicting everything from basic building and navigation to the latest changes and updates to the Second Life software.

Additional Second Life resources:

There are frequent classes offered in Second Life to help you familiarize yourself with the world and the navigation and building tools available.

The Info Archipelago group frequently offers "getting started" classes. You can find more info on upcoming classes, as well as social events and other meetings, at: http://infoisland.org/calendar/
