You: morning!
Scout Harbour: Hi Cat
Jezzie Woodget: good morning
Scout Harbour: Good morning
Jezzie Woodget: Cat, did you know that the first level of each office is now grass instead of tile?
Jezzie Woodget: Is that a prim-saving measure?
Tink Rang: Good morning
Jezzie Woodget: hi, Tink
Tink Rang: Hi Jezzie and Scout
Tink Rang: and Cat
Jezzie Woodget: How did you become a drunken mermaid?
Tink Rang: oh, I forgot to change the group rofl
Tink Rang: I went to a dance last night
Tink Rang: and joined the group!!!
You: morning
You: jezzie: I knew office 1 was, didn't know office 2 was
You: i will check on them after we meet
Scout Harbour: hi tink
Tink Rang: Hi
Wendy Donner: Hi All: How come more chairs 'magically' apear? Neat.
You: the table is scripted to do that
You: so how is everyone this morning?
Jezzie Woodget: fine
Wendy Donner: Sleepy :-)
Tink Rang: Great
Scout Harbour: good :)
You: any questions or comments ?
Jezzie Woodget: I've been trying a little scripting, but it's confusing
You: ok
You: i was not that happy with how I did Wednesday, so i hope today to be more clear and useful
You: Im going to talk about scripting again if no one minds or has other questions
You: morning montserrat
Montserrat Biedermann: morning cat!
Tink Rang: Morning Monserrat
Montserrat Biedermann: hi tink!
You: can everyone see this ok? [poster with picture of simple hover text script & comments]
Tink Rang: yes
You: ok
You: if you need to zoom in on it,
You: hold down "alt" and click on it, then you can use mousewheel to zoom in and out
You: any questions before we get started?
You: Scripting is the way to make objects move, speak, hand out items, and much more
You: Linden Scripting Language (LSL) is the language used inside SL
You: it is similar to languages such as C+ or Java
You: you can do a lot of powerful things with it if you learn to program - if you happen to know some programming already it's a big help
You: I'm not going to cover the powerful things you can create yourself, because that's not the focus of this class
You: also i have no idea how to do most of it
You: if you do get interested, you can take more in-depth classes
You: there's also a tutorial area, similar to the ivory tower of prims for building,
You: there's landmark for it - college of scripting music and science -
You: today we are going to talk more about how to take scripts others have written and use them in our libraries or other displays
Tink Rang: I saw a YouTube video this morning from there
Tink Rang: great
You: i'm going to start with a little talking about what scripts look like and how the function
You: thats why I made this poster for you all to look at
You: this is a sample of the famous "hovering text script"
You: that you all used to make your signs upstairs
You: this is a better one than I handed out then, i think
You: because it has explanatory text
You: when you make a script in SL, the different portions are in different colors
You: any text that starts with // is a 'comment'
You: it will not be used when the script runs
You: people often include them to document what they did while writing the script, what different portions do, etc
You: this is very handy for people like us who may want to modify things slightly without having to start from scratch
You: so here we can see an explanation of this script
You: in orange
You: the script itself is in black, green, blue
You: purple
You: each of these colors indicates that the portion you're looking at does something specific
You: for our purposes we will look at the green part
You: this is a text string
You: when you want to have hovering text, you can use this script and replace the words TEXT GOES HERE with whatever you'd like it to

say
You: many scripts have this sort of thing
You: where you can customize what the script does by opening it and making a specific change without changing HOW it works
You: the black numbers can be changed also
You: (the comments explain what they are for)
You: they change the color of the text, and its transparency
You: i think i just handed each of you a copy of this script
You: it is called "Hovering Text Script"
You: and should now be in your inven tory
Scout Harbour accepted your inventory offer.
You: to open it up to edit it, you right click on it in your inventory
You: when you have made the changes you want, you hit save
You: now, all scripts must be in an object to run
You: you can't just run it by itself
You: it can be a tiny, even invisible object
You: if you are running a script that doesn't need to be seen - like a visitor counter that counts anyone who comes within 10 meters
You: you can also put scripts in nearby objects that are serving a different purpose already - I put my visitor counter script in my library in

the rug
You: if you create an object, then drag this script into it, it should now say "TEXT GOES HERE" - or whatever you changed it to - over the

top
You: i just added it to this sign
You: any quuestions about how the script works, where to find them in your inventory, or how to insert them into an object?
Tink Rang: I have a visitor script but it wouldn't let me open it
Tink Rang: it was in a "free" box
Tink Rang: do I have to put it in an object before I can edit it?
You: if you have a script from someone else, if it says "no modify' you won't be able to see it - you dont' have permissions
You: otherwise you should be able to open and edit it in your inventory without putting it in an object
Tink Rang: how do I know what it does?
Tink Rang: if I cant open it?
You: well
You: you don't,
You: if you can't open it, probably best not to use it
Tink Rang: ok
You: you won't be able to change any settings either
You: so i have put together a bunch of scripts that may be useful to you guys
You: I got them, mostly, from the ICT Library, which is a fantastic resource for scripts and gadgets for educators
You: it is located on Info Island
You: If you all will lfollow me, i have a box ready for you guyss to grab with samples
You: over here in the unit 5 area
[group moves]
You: please take a copy of the box here
You: i did not have time to make sure it works right
You: so I hope it will work for you all
You: hard for me to test since I made it, the permissions are all set for me -
Montserrat Biedermann: is it the red box
You: gold box
Tink Rang: alll I get is a notecard
Scout Harbour: yup, same here.
You: take a copy
You: right click, select take copy
Scout Harbour: it doesn't allow you to
Tink Rang: there is no take a copy
You: :(
Jezzie Woodget: I got a group tag reminder that it is not set for building
You: i was afraid of this, damn it
Tink Rang: worked
You: ok, i think i handed everyone a copy
Montserrat Biedermann: got it!
You: should have an object called scriptin g class handout 5-24
You: now
You: just like getting a box at a freebie store or clothing store
You: you should be able to res it, "open" it, and get things in your inventory
Wendy Donner: I'm confused. I tried to drag it to the ground and it wouldn't let me. what did I miss?
Scout Harbour: yeah same here
Tink Rang: it took a while to rez
You: sdid you try again?
Wendy Donner: Cat: It tells me I cannot create objects here. . owner says it is not allowed.
Tink Rang: I dragged it onto the grass and after a few seconds it opened
Tink Rang: try over here
You: make sure your group is set to law Librarians in virtual worlds, and also make sure you are ressing on this side
You: we are right next to our neighbors land
Scout Harbour: Wendy, try it on the grass
Scout Harbour: It worked for me.
You: over here wendy
You: you're on our neigbor's side
You: inside the box are several things
You: boxes of scripts (general scripts, more general scripts, display scripts)
You: and some gadgets already including scripts
You: like the 1-prim clock
Tink Rang: cool clock
You: lots of these are also available at ICT Library
Jezzie Woodget: when I click copy to inventory, I get a warning that there are no-copy items
Jezzie Woodget: is it ok to move them to inventory? will it mess up the scripts?
You: i think it should be ok
You: i get that warning sometimes and never had a problem with it
Tink Rang: what's a holo emitter?
You: after class i will go thru and re-set all the permissions - you can come grab an improved version then
You: a holo-emitter is a pretty neat system
Wendy Donner: I'm getting a message from SL saying Second Life: Items coming in too fast, automatic preview disabled for 10 seconds.

What does this mean?
You: that's fine Wendy
Wendy Donner: OK
You: it just means instead of opening up each item's description it will just stick them in inventory without that preview
You: usually if you get an item you will get its little properties screen pop up
You: holo emitter lets you set up a 'scene', then make a sort of permanent record of it
You: when you want that scene set again, the holo emitter will res it for you
You: i'm not explaining this very well
Tink Rang: cool, man!!! lol
Tink Rang: sound good
You: do you see this gold ball i ressed here?
You: more of a diamond shape
Tink Rang: yes
You: if you touch it it will offer to res the pre-set scenes i have made
You: it's going to freak out with all the clutter on the land, because it won't res stuff on top of other stuff
You: but if you look over toward the wall you will see that someone ressed my lecturn - now someone ressed my beachhouse...
Montserrat Biedermann: tres cool!
You: thsee are all things i made and stored in the holo emitter
You: you can ONLY do it with things you have FULL permissions on
Tink Rang: do they just go away
Jezzie Woodget: cool
You: because it has to make copies
You: they will stay until someone chooses "clear"
You: they are real objects, for the most part, you can leaave them indefinitely
Tink Rang: I like that!
Tink Rang: thanks
You: that is a cool thing someone made and is letting educators / libraries use for free
You: so
You: i have put a bunch of scripts in here for you guys to play
You: with
You: some of the things that libraries do most often are create displays that offer to launch a web page
You: in "general scripts" you have a script called URL Loader that does that for you
You: just like the hover script, you have to open it up and insert the URL you want it to show
You: here's an example of it in action
Lawspot Poster owned by Cat Galileo gave you 'LawSpot, Bell Island 5th Fl, Info Island (206, 18, 69)' (
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Eduisland%204/22/153/24
).
You: er
You: i beg your pardon, this is an example of another script, the notecard giver
You: you will also have a notecard giver script
You: another thing libraries do a lot -- more info about the topic on a notecard
You: this little tiny thing is a vistor counter
You: you have a script to do this, but not a gadget to put it in
You: as i said you can put it in any thing
You: or you can use a little thing like this
Tink Rang: is the visitor counter in the genreal scripts box
You: i set it so you should be able to make a copy
You: it should be Tink
Tink Rang: k
Montserrat Biedermann: okay, I can't Take it
You: i wonder what i'm doing wrong
Tink Rang: you have to go to More
Scout Harbour: I was able to take a copy - you have to click More first
Jezzie Woodget: did you click more, then take copy?
Tink Rang: then take a copy
Montserrat Biedermann: worked!
You: super
Montserrat Biedermann: thanks!
You: so,
Tink Rang: Is the payment/donation box like you see at concerts for donations?
You: yes
You: it's set up for donations actually, not payment
Tink Rang: nice
You: i think you could change that tho by opening the script and modifying it
Object: touch for web dialog
You: here, i have ressed an item that will offer to launch MULTIPLE websites
web browser: touch for web dialog
web browser: touch for web dialog
web browser: touch for web dialog
Montserrat Biedermann: oh, this is like anne idler's spot
You: i put in a list of URLS that I made for banned book week (obviously, LOL)
You: yes this is probably the same script she uses
SL Library Monitor 1.3 (wall): touch for web dialog, or use ch 780 to get web pages (example "/780 3")
You: you can put it in a screan set up, or a little computer
Virtual Lawyers: touch for web dialog
You: in order to tell it what sites to include, you open the object and edit a notecard , rather than editing the script itself
You: I THINK i have managed to set this sample one to let you copy it
You: you want just the blank box here
You: the poster has an older version of the script
You: the little monitor should be copiable too
You: the little monitor has two scripts in it
You: the bwb 2.0 script
Jezzie Woodget: I can't copy the little monitor
You: and the "give notecards" script
Tink Rang: I did it again
Montserrat Biedermann: ditto
Jezzie Woodget: now I don't even see the little monitor
Tink Rang: what is it called?
Virtual Lawyers: touch for web dialog
Virtual Lawyers: touch for web dialog
You: virtual lawyers
Tink Rang: It doesn't show take a copy, just take
Jezzie Woodget: nope
Montserrat Biedermann: now it won't give me the take option
Virtual Lawyers: touch for web dialog
Virtual Lawyers: touch for web dialog
Virtual Lawyers: touch for web dialog
Jezzie Woodget: I broke it :)
Montserrat Biedermann: :-)
Tink Rang: no, I did! lol
You: try now- i have to set the permissions on every single item in its inventory to let others copy -- it should work now
You: sorry for the delay
Tink Rang: take it back Cat and change the permission on the small computer
You: next time i will find a guinea pig before the class
Montserrat Biedermann: make it tink...:-)
Tink Rang: lost it
Tink Rang: someone else took it
Montserrat Biedermann: i took it - how do i give it back?
Tink Rang: do you have another small computer?
Tink Rang: just drop it on the ground
You: i took it
You: i am modifying it in inventory
Tink Rang: whooo , what fun!!!!!
Montserrat Biedermann: lol
monitor 2.0 sample: touch for web dialog
Jezzie Woodget: I volunteer to be guinea pig
Tink Rang: ]nope, doesnt say take a copy
Jezzie Woodget: I need the practice
Jezzie Woodget: thx
Montserrat Biedermann: ;-) okay, i second jezzie as guinea pig...:-)
You: I handed one to 4 of you, who did I miss?
Tink Rang: me
Tink Rang: thanks
Jezzie Woodget: I got it, but it says no modify
You: you should be able to make copies
Montserrat Biedermann: same with mine
You: and modify the url card
Scout Harbour: same here
monitor 2.0 sample: touch for web dialog
You: its just the BWB script itself that is no modify
Jezzie Woodget: k
You: so
Montserrat Biedermann: so I should just be able to replace your text with mine in the script?
You: i hope that works for you guys
You: yes Montserrat
You: and delete my notecards and use your own
Montserrat Biedermann: got it, thanks!
You: or if you don't care to use notecards just leave them out
You: ok lets see, i have 1 minute :)
You: slideshow!
You: i think i put one of these in the box
You: should advance when clicked
You: rotating alphabetically through textures the owner places in its inventory
You: i made these textures in power point
You: saved them as JPGs
You: uploaded them to SL
You: and placed them INSIDE the poster
You: (not using them as a texture, but putting them INSIDE the contents tab)
Tink Rang: they are nice and clear
You: in order to use this for a display,
You: you would just delete the textures I put in there
You: and add your own
You: ok
You: so i beleive you should now have a sample of each of the scripts we talked about
You: and a couple of useful gadgets
You: does anyone have questions?
Montserrat Biedermann: no, many thanks, cat!
You: thanks for coming
Tink Rang: this was great
Scout Harbour: thanks!
Wendy Donner: A million! But it will take some practice. Thanks.
You: i'll hang out for a while if you have questions-
Jezzie Woodget: thanks
Tink Rang: will there be another class?
You: starting this Wednesday i will continue having the office hours at the same times
Tink Rang: party?
You: mostly for questions and projects
You: but i will be bugging the frolks who signed up but haven['t been active to come back
You: frolks... lol
You: good time for a party!!
Tink Rang: rofl
Jezzie Woodget: I have a question about my project. Are there limits on which scripts can go in the same object?
You: no, not really, as far as I know
You: as long as they dont' contradict each other
Tink Rang: good question, Jezzie
Jezzie Woodget: I tried to add the hovering script to the computer monitor, but it didn't work.
You: some scripts cause some lag, so you would probably want to find out if yours do
Jezzie Woodget: I brought a copy if that would help
You: did it let you add the script but it just didn't show the text?
Jezzie Woodget: yes
You: ok
You: try opening it up and look at the bottom left
You: of the script
monitor 2.0 sample: touch for web dialog
You: there is a checkbox for "running"
Montserrat Biedermann: gotta go, thanks again, cat, and bye everyone!
You: thanks Montserrat!
You: make sure it's running
You: also,
Wendy Donner: Me Too. Thanks and see you later.
You: there's already a hover text
Scout Harbour: bye everyone!
You: by scout! by wendy!
Tink Rang: bye
You: bye* even
You: i will tell you something about these monitors
You: they are a pain
Jezzie Woodget: but they look good
Tink Rang: this was a good class
Tink Rang: thanks
You: thank you!
