[9:03] Cat Galileo: good morning everyone
[9:03] Jezzie Woodget: hi cat
[9:03] Montserrat Biedermann: good morning!
[9:03] Cat Galileo: how are you doing with SL?
[9:03] Jezzie Woodget: ok
[9:03] Cat Galileo: any problems this week? or new discoveries?
[9:04] You: I saw the Globe theatre last night
[9:04] Montserrat Biedermann: cool!
[9:04] You: with a Shakespeare play going on
[9:04] Cat Galileo: very neat!
[9:04] You: yea
[9:04] Cat Galileo: I should let you know - I have a meeting at 10 so i will have to leave promptly then
[9:04] Cat Galileo: the SL Bar Association is meeting at 10
[9:04] Cat Galileo: if anyone is interested
[9:05] Cat Galileo: and I'[m on the Ex. board since I just can't seem to say no when people ask me to do things. lol
[9:05] Montserrat Biedermann: can we attend if we're not members?
[9:05] Cat Galileo: yes, absolutely
[9:06] Montserrat Biedermann: thanks, i'll try to teleport there
[9:06] Cat Galileo: so, this week we will talk about building if no one has any other questions to start off with?
[9:06] Wendy Donner: Is anyone here using a Mac?
[9:06] You: no
[9:06] Cat Galileo: I'm not. are you , Wendy?
[9:07] Cat Galileo: some of the controls are a bit different
[9:07] Wendy Donner: I have a new one at home that I'm using and really like, but my screen is currently . . .moving around with my mouse . and I can't stop it!
[9:07] You: I think the knowledge base has a list of commands
[9:07] Cat Galileo: oh dear
[9:07] Wendy Donner: It
[9:07] Wendy Donner: It is not an SL thing . . it is a Mac thing. . do you mean the Mac KB?
[9:07] Cat Galileo: are you seeing things from first person view instead of from behind you?
[9:07] You: sounds like you are in mouselook
[9:08] Wendy Donner: Nope. . the entire screen moves. .
[9:08] You: scroll back
[9:08] Cat Galileo: oh
[9:09] Wendy Donner: My desktop is moving. . even outside of SL . .I'll be ok just a little shaky until I fix it.T
[9:09] Cat Galileo: ok, well, let me know if you're having trouble
[9:10] Cat Galileo: I think everyone has at least made their office sign here, so you have created at least one object :)
[9:11] Cat Galileo: Building can be as simple as piling building blocks on each other or as complicated as creating tiny jewelry or complex buildings
[9:11] Cat Galileo: we're mostly going to stick to the piling building blocks level in this session :)
[9:11] You: good
[9:11] Cat Galileo: and we should probably have a little more space to work with
[9:11] Cat Galileo: would everyone mind popping up to the skysandbox?
[9:12] Cat Galileo: Tink has set up a nice buiding grid there too
[9:12] Cat Galileo: wendy is rebooting
[9:12] You: did you just change your skirt?
[9:13] Cat Galileo: no... not on purpose anyway!
[9:13] You: it is back, sorry
[9:13] Cat Galileo: that's a little alarming!
[9:13] Cat Galileo: anyway
[9:14] You: it looked long
[9:14] Cat Galileo: ok
[9:14] Cat Galileo: hvae you been playing around with building at all?
[9:14] Cat Galileo: I know tink has some experience with it
[9:14] Jezzie Woodget: just a little
[9:14] Jezzie Woodget: nothing I wanted to keep
[9:15] Cat Galileo: we will start by making an object - let's start with a box - and look at some of the ways we can manipulate it
[9:15] Cat Galileo: basic object is going to be the same size each time
[9:15] Cat Galileo: when you first res it
[9:17] Cat Galileo: sorry, trying to talk to wendy
[9:17] Nora Gabe: allo
[9:17] Montserrat Biedermann: allo nora!
[9:17] Cat Galileo: hi Nora
[9:18] Nora Gabe: i must be heacing off but i hope u have a good time!
[9:18] Montserrat Biedermann: great outfit!
[9:18] Nora Gabe: thx
[9:18] Cat Galileo: sorry for the delay folks
[9:19] Cat Galileo: basic object is the same size each time, when you rez it. for a cube its 0.5x0.5x0.5
[9:19] Cat Galileo: you can see this if you click on your object and look at the first panel
[9:19] Cat Galileo: edit- object
[9:19] Cat Galileo: (I guess that's the second panel, after general)
[9:20] Cat Galileo: you might want to make your own object to see this, i'm not sure if you can see it on mine?
[9:20] Nora Gabe: i forgot to tell u if u want to go to ren island its acrowss the stone wall!
[9:20] Nora Gabe: bebez
[9:20] Cat Galileo: thanks Nora :)
[9:21] Cat Galileo: The options I'm looking at are "Position (meters), Size (meters) and Rotation (degrees)
[9:22] Cat Galileo: Size (meters) is x-.5, y-.5, z-.5 by default
[9:22] Cat Galileo: you can chan ge this in 2 ways
[9:22] Cat Galileo: up at the top of the edit screen is a series of radio buttons
[9:23] Cat Galileo: click on "stretch" and you will get colored boxes surrounding the item
[9:23] Cat Galileo: and you can use your mouse to click and hold, then stretch the item in different dimensions
[9:23] Cat Galileo: you can also be more precise
[9:23] You: sorry :)
[9:23] Cat Galileo: by clicking in the "Size (Meters") area and typing how large or small you want to make it
[9:23] Cat Galileo: no prob, this is hands on :)
[9:24] Cat Galileo: so if you click there you can be precise and change it in small increments
[9:24] Cat Galileo: be right back
[9:25] Jezzie Woodget: I keep building below the surface
[9:26] PNP FlashTP whispers: Arrived at destination 'Skysandbox', materializing passenger...
[9:26] PNP FlashTP whispers: Thank you for using Punky Nerd Production's FlashTP.
[9:26] Cat Galileo: tink
[9:26] Cat Galileo: would you mind bringing wendy up here? I think she may have muted me by accident
[9:26] Cat Galileo: she can't hear me
[9:26] You: sure
[9:27] Cat Galileo: looks like you have started playign with "rotation" :)
[9:27] You: hi,
[9:27] You: click on the sandbox and let's go up
[9:28] You: 1sandbox is on the left
[9:28] You: do you hear me?
[9:28] Wendy Donner: YEs, I can make it to the Sandbox. . I wasn't communicating with cat for some reason. . Thanks.
[9:28] You: you don't have to go over
[9:28] You: just click on left button
[9:29] Jezzie Woodget: I can
[9:29] Wendy Donner: It says 'muted' above her head. Can I control that?
[9:29] Cat Galileo: yes
[9:29] Cat Galileo: /nod
[9:29] Cat Galileo: but i can't tell you how
[9:29] Cat Galileo: lol
[9:29] Jezzie Woodget: right click on her
[9:29] Wendy Donner: I think I just unmuted Cat. . can we communicate now?
[9:30] Cat Galileo: can you hear me?
[9:30] Wendy Donner: Yes!! I'm so sorry to be a bother. .
[9:30] Cat Galileo: yay!
[9:30] Cat Galileo: no problem! learning experience
[9:30] Cat Galileo: if you have troublesome people near by (or loud objects for that matter) you can mute them
[9:31] Cat Galileo: hopefully I wasn't being troublesome :)
[9:31] Wendy Donner: I don't know how that happened to you.. I thought you were just busy for the past week! :-)
[9:31] Cat Galileo: lol :)
[9:31] Cat Galileo: wendy, is your screen working better now?
[9:31] Wendy Donner: Nope. . it's a Mac thing. . another learning curve. But I should be able to function
[9:32] Cat Galileo: ok wendy please go ahead and make a box
[9:32] Wendy Donner: OK, I'm going to move out of the way first.
[9:33] Cat Galileo: asic object is the same size each time, when you rez it. for a cube its 0.5x0.5x0.5
[9:33] Cat Galileo: you can see this if you click on your object and look at the second panel, "object," under the edit controls
[9:33] Cat Galileo: The options I'm looking at are "Position (meters), Size (meters) and Rotation (degrees)
[9:33] Cat Galileo: Size (meters) is x-.5, y-.5, z-.5 by default
[9:34] Cat Galileo: You: up at the top of the edit screen is a series of radio buttons You: click on "stretch" and you will get colored boxes surrounding the item You: and you can use your mouse to click and hold, then stretch the item in different dimensions You: you can also be more precise
[9:34] Cat Galileo: You: by clicking in the "Size (Meters") area and typing how large or small you want to make it You: no prob, this is hands on :) You: so if you click there you can be precise and change it in small increments
[9:34] Cat Galileo: sorry for the quick recap
[9:35] Cat Galileo: other options in that area are Rotate - and position - both ofwich you can do witht he blue-red-green tools, or more precisely by tyuping numbers into the boxes
[9:36] Cat Galileo: max size is 10meters x10 x10
[9:36] Cat Galileo: there's a minimum too,
[9:37] Cat Galileo: .010 i think
[9:37] Cat Galileo: tho there are ways around that (people use them for jewelry) but we wont' talk about that now
[9:37] Cat Galileo: (I dont' know it anyway :))
[9:37] Cat Galileo: you can also change from Box to other shapes
[9:38] Cat Galileo: sometimes if you have altered one shepe, than choose another, you get unexpected results - that's also used for making interesting ojbects
[9:38] Cat Galileo: there are many shapes to play with
[9:38] Cat Galileo: most are normal geometric shapes
[9:38] Cat Galileo: sculptie is a different animal altogether, leave that alone for now
[9:39] Cat Galileo: under the "building block type" area are options that change based on the type of block you have
[9:39] Cat Galileo: for boxes, you will see hollow, twist, taper, top shear
[9:39] Cat Galileo: you can adjust these for interesting effects
[9:40] You: hang on a min. Mon has lost his item below
[9:40] Cat Galileo: you can make a one-prim small room by making a 10x10x10 box and hollowing it out
[9:40] Cat Galileo: ok sorry
[9:42] Cat Galileo: everyone good now?
[9:42] Jezzie Woodget: yes
[9:42] Cat Galileo: the last thing i will show you on this screen is that you can change the textures
[9:43] Cat Galileo: er material
[9:43] Cat Galileo: here
[9:43] You: I guess go ahead
[9:43] Cat Galileo: default is wood
[9:43] Cat Galileo: but you can change to other things
[9:43] Cat Galileo: interestingly they have different frictions so if you wanted to make a vehicle you usually use glass for lowest friction
[9:43] Cat Galileo: i'm not sure what other effects they may have
[9:44] Wendy Donner: How did you raise your box into the sky?
[9:44] Cat Galileo: you can use the "position" tool to raise and lower
[9:44] Cat Galileo: they don't have to sit on the ground --
[9:44] Cat Galileo: if you CHOOSE "physical" on this object tab, things will fall like normal objects
[9:45] Cat Galileo: by default they are not physical and can hover whereever
[9:45] Cat Galileo: Mont are you set?
[9:45] Jezzie Woodget: Cat, how do you change material?
[9:45] Montserrat Biedermann: sorry, how do i get to physical
[9:45] Cat Galileo: change material is at bottom left of "object" tab
[9:46] Cat Galileo: "phantom" is a choice at the left side, about halfway up\
[9:46] Jezzie Woodget: duh
[9:46] Jezzie Woodget: thanks
[9:46] Cat Galileo: phantom can be nice
[9:46] Montserrat Biedermann: okay i see it
[9:46] Cat Galileo: you can make display walls that people can walk through
[9:46] Cat Galileo: so they display but don't get in the way
[9:46] Cat Galileo: anyway
[9:46] Cat Galileo: any questions on this object tab area?
[9:47] Cat Galileo: I know i'm going through the pretty briefly
[9:47] Cat Galileo: the other main area I want to talk about
[9:47] Wendy Donner: What is 'phantom'. . I missed that?
[9:47] Cat Galileo: is the Texture tab
[9:47] Wendy Donner: OK, thanks.
[9:47] Cat Galileo: phantom" is a choice at the left side, about halfway up\
[9:48] Cat Galileo: makes things show, but not block walking
[9:48] Cat Galileo: ok
[9:48] Cat Galileo: Texture tab is the fourth tab
[9:48] Cat Galileo: here you can do some neat things
[9:48] Cat Galileo: change color
[9:49] Cat Galileo: select images to put on the object
[9:49] Montserrat Biedermann: how do you do that (select images)
[9:49] Cat Galileo: if you click your object, select texture, and click on the wood swatch
[9:49] Cat Galileo: you should get a pop up screen
[9:49] Cat Galileo: the pop-up screen displays your inventory
[9:50] Cat Galileo: but only the textures will show
[9:50] Cat Galileo: you can look through there for a texture you like
[9:50] Cat Galileo: there are some built in ones under "Library"
[9:50] Cat Galileo: and probably you have some miscellaneous ones in various parts of your inventory
[9:51] Cat Galileo: ius that working for people?
[9:51] Montserrat Biedermann: yep, thanks!
[9:51] Cat Galileo: so
[9:51] Cat Galileo: between manipulating the shape and the texture you can do a lot
[9:51] Cat Galileo: here's something I had a hard time learning to do
[9:52] Cat Galileo: while you have your object selected
[9:52] Cat Galileo: click the radio button "select texture"
[9:52] Cat Galileo: you should notice that you now have a circle with a cross in it on the sides
[9:52] Cat Galileo: now cick on just ONE side
[9:53] Cat Galileo: you should notice that now, the circle with cross is only on that side
[9:53] Cat Galileo: now choose a texture or color
[9:53] Cat Galileo: it should go only on that side

[here is a NEW torley linden video on this very topic! http://vidtuts.s3.amazonaws.com/QUICKTIP-Make-a-1-way-tinted-window.mp4]

[9:53] Jezzie Woodget: cool
[9:53] You: you can't undo a texture, can you?
[9:54] Cat Galileo: if you click "default" it should rever to wood
[9:54] Jezzie Woodget: are the books a texture, tink?
[9:54] You: yes
[9:54] Montserrat Biedermann: where are they in the inventory?
[9:54] Cat Galileo: you can purchase or swap textures just like items
[9:54] You: I clicked default but it didnt change back
[9:55] You: I have thousands of textures that I have gotten free
[9:55] You: I can give you landmarks
[9:55] Cat Galileo: make sure you have the object selected, click on the texture swatch, then click Default in the window that pops up
[9:55] Cat Galileo: does that work better?
[9:55] Montserrat Biedermann: thanks!
[9:55] Cat Galileo: ok here is a VERY important thing about textures
[9:56] Wendy Donner: Tnk: Would you send the landmark on book textures to the group?
[9:56] Cat Galileo: you can make your own textures - but you have to do it outside second Life, using photoshop or any draw program, even powerpoint
[9:56] You: sure
[9:57] Montserrat Biedermann accepted your inventory offer.
[9:57] Jezzie Woodget accepted your inventory offer.
[9:57] Wendy Donner accepted your inventory offer.
[9:57] Cat Galileo accepted your inventory offer.
[9:57] Cat Galileo: if you make a texture it will need to be saved as a .jpg, targa, png, or bmp file
[9:58] Cat Galileo: you can export a power point as a .jpg
[9:58] Cat Galileo: that is usually how i make signs
[9:58] Wendy Donner: That will be useful.
[9:58] Cat Galileo: any questions about that? I'm making a big assumption that you guys know what I mean about the jpg
[9:59] Cat Galileo: once you make a jpg
[9:59] Cat Galileo: you will need to upload it into Second Life
[9:59] Cat Galileo: the way to do that is to use file-upload
[9:59] Cat Galileo: File-upload image
[9:59] Cat Galileo: it will cost you $L10
[9:59] Cat Galileo: you can do batch uploads if you have a lot to upload - no cost savings but faster
[10:00] You: do you zip them?
[10:00] Cat Galileo: i don't
[10:00] Cat Galileo: I dont know if you can
[10:00] Montserrat Biedermann: don't we need to save our $L for the individual project?
[10:00] You: just select them all then upload?
[10:00] Cat Galileo: yes, the upload images menu item will give you a browse window like a standard windows browse window
[10:00] You: cool
[10:01] Cat Galileo: Unfortunately, I need to get over the the SLBar Assn meeting
[10:01] You: I can stay and help
[10:01] Cat Galileo: I think I covered most of what I wanted to, tho I was hping to talk about linking
[10:01] Cat Galileo: thank you very much tink
[10:01] Cat Galileo: I can answer ? by IM
[10:01] Jezzie Woodget: Thanks, Tink
[10:01] Cat Galileo: have fun playing around!
[10:01] You: sure
[10:01] Wendy Donner: Thanks!
[10:01] You: bye
[10:01] Montserrat Biedermann: thanks, cat!
[10:01] Wendy Donner: Tink. . can you show us linking?
[10:01] You: yes
[10:02] You: I have done it but don't know a lot
[10:02] You: first create two pieces
[10:02] You: or
[10:02] You: you can duplicate your first piece
[10:02] Montserrat Biedermann: are you talking about objects = pieces?
[10:02] You: if you edit and be on position
[10:02] You: click the right or left arrow when holding down the control key
[10:03] You: sorry wrong key
[10:03] You: shift key
[10:03] You: it will make a second copy of your piece
[10:04] You: monserrat, did you try?
[10:04] You: good Jezzie
[10:04] Montserrat Biedermann: i'm trying, when does the shift come in?
[10:04] You: shift click and drag the arrow
[10:04] You: left or right
[10:05] You: hold down the shift
[10:05] You: if it flies off hit control z to undo
[10:05] You: be sure the radial button at top says position
[10:06] You: Wendy do you need help
[10:07] Wendy Donner: I just attached my object to my head! Lol. . .
[10:07] You: \I don't see it
[10:07] Wendy Donner: I unattached it but now it is gone. . funny!
[10:07] You: try to get the ball back on the ground
[10:08] You: good
[10:08] You: now hold shift and click right arrow
[10:08] You: it may be another key on the mac
[10:08] You: just try
[10:08] You: good
[10:08] You: ok, now move the two objects together
[10:08] You: however you want to keep them linked
[10:09] Wendy Donner: I'm missing how we keep them linked.
[10:09] You: hold shift key down to select both objects and hit contyrol L
[10:10] You: They don't need to be touching
[10:10] You: but they can't be too far away either
[10:10] Wendy Donner: I think I did it. . they duplicate together too, right?
[10:10] You: whoa, you have lots
[10:10] You: wow
[10:10] You: cool
[10:11] You: yes, anything that's linnked will duplicate together too
[10:11] Montserrat Biedermann: my object just won't cooperate with each other!
[10:11] You: the only thing we need to ask Cat is how to UNlink, I can't ever remember that!!!!
[10:12] You: did you give one of yours different properties?
[10:12] Jezzie Woodget: I'm not sure how I did it, but mine rotate opposite each other
[10:12] You: Mons, just try to link them
[10:12] You: what do you mean?
[10:12] Montserrat Biedermann: I might have. Okay, let's see if I remember how to
[10:13] You: control L
[10:13] You: shift to select both first then control L
[10:13] Montserrat Biedermann: says unable to link as i don't have modify permission on them
[10:14] You: what objects did you linke?
[10:14] Montserrat Biedermann: my two uncooperative boxes!
[10:14] You: go to the general page and click on both boxes
[10:14] You: you should be able to modify
[10:16] You: oh, one more thing
[10:16] Montserrat Biedermann: hmm, says you cannot modify these objects
[10:16] You: if you want to edit one ppiece at a time or move it
[10:16] You: click on the linked parts box at the top
[10:16] You: this lets you edit one of the linked paarts./
[10:16] You: sorry for my typing
[10:16] You: too fast
[10:17] You: Wendy, now I see two attached to you
[10:17] Wendy Donner: Yes, I feel out of the sandbox with my object on my head. . I'm having too much fun today!! One can right click on the object and then say more and then attach.
[10:17] You: llcool
[10:18] You: you need to get the feather Cat givees out
[10:18] You: it lets you fly up here
[10:18] You: darn, a few mins ago I unlinked them now I don't remember how
[10:18] Montserrat Biedermann: okay, i'm going to the SL Bar meeting now. Thanks, Tink, and bye! Bye Jezzie and Wendy!
[10:18] You: ugh :(
[10:19] You: bye
[10:19] Wendy Donner: Bye!
[10:19] You: you can delete your boxes
[10:19] You: if you want
[10:19] You: you can also take them with you
[10:19] You: if you want to delete, right click , more, delete
[10:19] You: or right click and take
[10:19] You: you may want to name your object on the first page of edit
[10:20] Wendy Donner: I suppose we should delete as a general practice to save prims?
[10:20] You: so you know what it is in your inventory
[10:20] You: yes
[10:20] You: or take
[10:20] You: any questions?
[10:20] Jezzie Woodget: Not right now
[10:21] You: good
[10:21] Jezzie Woodget: thanks for all your help
[10:21] Wendy Donner: Not now. Thanks for your help!
[10:21] You: My pleasure
[10:21] Wendy Donner: See you guys at the next session
[10:21] You: ok
[10:21] Jezzie Woodget: bye
